Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the Onitsha Main Market closure following what the state government described as defiance of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) sit-at-home directive by traders operating within the commercial hub.
The directive was confirmed in a statement issued by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, who said the decision was taken to enforce the rule of law and prevent actions capable of undermining public order and economic stability.
According to the state government, intelligence reports indicated that despite repeated warnings, some traders opened shops in defiance of the sit-at-home order, exposing residents and traders to potential security risks.

Onitsha Main Market closure framed as law enforcement measure
The Soludo administration said the temporary closure is not intended as a punitive action against traders but as a regulatory step to reinforce lawful conduct and discourage compliance with directives issued by proscribed groups.
“The closure is aimed at protecting lives, restoring order and ensuring that economic activities are not conducted under conditions of intimidation or unlawful influence,” the statement said.
Officials noted that the market would remain closed pending further security assessments and compliance with government directives.

Economic and security implications
Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest commercial centres in West Africa, serving as a major trading hub for the South-East and beyond. Any disruption to its operations has significant economic implications for traders, transporters and supply chains across the region.
The state government acknowledged the economic cost of the closure but insisted that maintaining security and public order remains paramount.
Authorities also warned that individuals or groups found undermining lawful directives would face sanctions in line with existing laws.
Call for cooperation
The government urged traders, market leaders and residents to cooperate with security agencies and avoid actions that could escalate tension or disrupt economic activity.
It reaffirmed its commitment to restoring normal commercial operations once conditions are deemed safe and lawful, adding that sustained engagement with stakeholders will continue to ensure stability in the state.
