Naira Rebounds: Strengthens to N1,493 Officially, Amid CBN Interventions

Naira Strengthens Against Dollar: Official Rate Hits N1,493, Parallel Market Reaches N1,627

In a surprising turn of events, the Nigerian naira has gained ground against the U.S. dollar, trading at N1,627 in the parallel market and N1,493 in the official market as of January 30. This marks a significant 1.39% improvement in the parallel market from N1,650 on January 24.

Factors Behind the Surge
What’s driving the naira’s appreciation? Currency traders, including bureau de change (BDC) operators in Lagos, point to a lower demand for the dollar as a key factor. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) steady intervention in dollar sales through banks this week is also seen as a stabilizing force. The local currency has shown a consistent upward trend in the official market, moving from N1,533 on January 26 to N1,493 by Thursday.

Profit Margins and Market Moves
BDC operators quoted a buying rate of N1,610 for the dollar and a selling price of N1,627, leaving a profit margin of N17. The intervention by the CBN is seen as playing a crucial role in reducing volatility and maintaining balance in the FX market.

CBN’s Strategic Efforts
On the heels of this appreciation, the Central Bank of Nigeria officially launched the foreign exchange (FX) code on January 28. This move is designed to improve the integrity and functionality of Nigeria’s wholesale FX market, further strengthening the country’s flexible exchange rate regime.

The Big Picture
The naira’s modest gain reflects both the intervention of the CBN and a cooling of demand for the dollar. While the market shows optimism, there’s still much to watch in the coming months as global and domestic factors continue to impact the exchange rate.
