SDP vs El-Rufai: Crack in the Opposition Alliance

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a scathing public denial of any association with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, debunking claims that he is involved in a new political alliance involving the SDP, Labour Party, and PDP.
This rebuttal comes amid rising speculation about an opposition realignment aimed at unseating the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement released over the weekend, SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba, accused El-Rufai of false attribution and warned him against dragging the party into political speculation.
“At no time has the SDP met or entered any discussion with Nasir El-Rufai regarding any form of political collaboration,” Aiyenigba said.
“We urge the public to disregard these insinuations. SDP has a clear ideological path and will not be conscripted into backdoor alliances or deceptive politicking.”
EL-RUFAI AND THE RUMOURED OPPOSITION FRONT
El-Rufai — a former APC chieftain who has maintained a low profile since leaving office — has been increasingly mentioned in political circles as a possible power broker or even a surprise candidate in an emerging mega-coalition of opposition elements.
Reports last week suggested that meetings had taken place in Abuja involving representatives from the Labour Party, PDP, SDP, and other third-force actors.
However, SDP’s latest move signals resistance to such arrangements, especially if they appear improvised or self-serving.
OPPOSITION UNITY UNDER STRAIN
While political analysts have long speculated about a grand opposition coalition to challenge APC’s dominance in 2027, internal contradictions and ideological fractures continue to haunt the project.
The latest SDP statement underscores these tensions.
“We are open to progressive alliances,” Aiyenigba clarified, “but not with individuals whose values and governance records conflict with ours.”
ANALYSIS: ALLIANCE WITHOUT CONSENSUS?
Dr. Fatima Ayoola, a political analyst at the Centre for Democracy and Leadership, believes this episode exposes the fault lines within the proposed alliance.
“You cannot unite forces against a ruling party if the internal house is divided,” she said.
“The SDP’s statement is a warning flare — alliances must be rooted in mutual respect, not desperation.”
With 2027 still two years away, the road to opposition unity is proving rockier than anticipated.
