Rivers Political Crisis:Lawmakers Block Governor Fubara from Assembly Quarters

Tensions Escalate: Fubara Denied Access to Rivers Assembly Quarters

The Rivers political crisis took a dramatic turn on Wednesday, as Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the Rivers State Assembly Quarters in Port Haourt.

Governor Fubara had arrived at the quarters to re-present the 2025 budget to the faction of the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. However, upon arrival, he was met with locked gates, effectively barring him from engaging with the lawmakers.

A circulating video clip captured the governor and his entourage stranded outside the quarters, intensifying the Rivers political crisis that has already divided the Rivers State legislature.

⚖️ Power Struggle: Wike vs. Fubara Faction
This latest development stems from the ongoing Rivers political crisis, which has pitted Governor Fubara against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of Rivers State.

Since late 2023, Rivers State has been embroiled in a fierce power struggle, which split the assembly into two factions:
✔ The Pro-Wike Faction: Led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule and consisting of 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike.
✔ The Pro-Fubara Faction: Backed by a smaller group of lawmakers resisting Wike’s influence over the state’s political structures.

In December 2023, the Rivers State Assembly Complex was demolished, forcing the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to conduct legislative sittings from their official residence at the Assembly Quarters.

Now, Fubara’s attempt to engage the lawmakers at their new chamber has been completely blocked, fueling concerns over governance and deepening the Rivers political crisis.

📢 Fubara Speaks Out: “This Is a Deliberate Avoidance”
Addressing reporters outside the locked gates, Governor Fubara condemned Speaker Martin Amaewhule for intentionally avoiding him.

“Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the speaker. I also sent a letter for this particular invitation. Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.”
This latest standoff raises critical questions:
⚡ Who truly controls the Rivers State Assembly?
⚡ Can governance function under this political deadlock?
⚡ What are the implications for Rivers State’s 2025 budget?

🔮 What’s Next in Rivers’ Political Crisis?
With tensions at a boiling point, the Rivers political crisis is at a crossroads. Fubara’s inability to access the assembly raises concerns over the stability of governance in the state.

Will the Federal Government intervene? Or will this power struggle continue to disrupt legislative and executive functions in Rivers State?
