A quiet but firm message is being sent across the sports world at the Gateway Games 2024: Nigeria is no longer tolerating doping violations.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the disqualification of athletes flagged for anti-doping infractions, aligning strictly with global best practices and the recently ratified national anti-doping law.

The disqualification directive came after a joint review meeting between the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), reinforcing the NSF’s stance as a proving ground for clean sport.

A New Era of Compliance Under Tinubu’s Sports Reform Agenda

This is the first NSF held under the framework of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s National Sports Reform Law, which formally embeds Nigeria’s anti-doping obligations under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards into national legislation.

“We are committed to ensuring every athlete competes clean,” said NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade.
“Now that the national anti-doping law has been signed into force, the ripple effects must begin here.”

Zero Tolerance, Full Integrity

According to NSC Director of Press, Kehinde Ajayi, all registered athletes with unresolved doping issues have been declared ineligible for medal competition. Their status is being flagged to avoid any possibility of scoring or advancing.

The move signals a firm break from past leniencies and represents a major leap toward compliance with global sporting governance.

“We want Nigeria’s sports future to be clean, credible, and respected globally,” Ajayi said in the official statement.

Athletes, Coaches, and States on Notice

Participating states have been formally reminded to screen and comply with anti-doping protocols. The NSC has urged state federations to invest in pre-competition education and testing to avoid embarrassment at national and international levels.

Analysts believe the development will improve the credibility of NSF medal data, while increasing Nigeria’s standing in continental and global sports events.
