Remo Stars Close in on Historic NPFL Title Ahead of Niger Tornadoes Clash

Remo Stars are just one crucial victory away from putting one hand firmly on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) trophy as they prepare to host Niger Tornadoes later today at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ikenne.

Sitting atop the table with 64 points after 34 matches, Remo Stars find themselves in a commanding position following Rivers United’s damaging 2-0 defeat to Kano Pillars on Friday night. That result opened a seven-point gap, giving Remo a massive advantage with just four games left to play.

Coach Daniel Ogunmodede, however, has called for focus and humility despite the favourable circumstances.

“I am not feeling anything. We won’t be declared champions until we truly are,” he told Punch in an interview, urging his players not to lose concentration.

Defenders Fabian Nworie and Ifeanyi Anaemena, both experienced NPFL winners from their time at Rivers United, echoed Ogunmodede’s message, emphasizing the need for 100 per cent commitment in every remaining match.

Today’s opponents, Niger Tornadoes, are fighting their own survival battle. They sit precariously in 14th place, only two points above the relegation zone, making the stakes even higher.

A victory for Remo Stars today would see them move 10 points clear, making it mathematically impossible for any rival to overtake them unless a major collapse occurs.

However, anything less than a win could reignite Rivers United’s slim hopes.

  • A draw would maintain Remo’s eight-point lead with nine points left to contest.

  • A defeat, while unlikely, would cut the gap to seven, keeping the title chase alive.

With three games left after today — including tough tests against Abia Warriors, Sunshine Stars, and Kano Pillars — Ogunmodede’s men know every point is crucial.

For Remo Stars, a win today is not just about three points — it would be about history, redemption after back-to-back second-place finishes, and fulfilling a dream long in the making.

The game kicks off at 5:30 p.m. in Ikenne, with the eyes of Nigerian football firmly watching.
