NSC Calms Chelle Exit Fears As Super Eagles Contract Talks Continue

The National Sports Commission has moved to calm concerns over Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles future, insisting the Nigeria coach remains focused despite reports linking him with Algeria and clubs in North Africa.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade told The PUNCH that Chelle is not distracted by the speculation and that the remaining issue around his improved deal is documentation.

“Before contracts are signed on paper, you must have done a great deal of work to solidify all ends,” Olopade said.

“It’s a renewed contract, which means it’s an existing one. We have agreed, so I am sure that the Nigeria Football Federation will conclude the documentation as soon as possible.

“Eric is a gentleman, so all the stories about other countries looking for him do not hold water. I’ve sat with him and I know he is not bothered by all those rumours.”

The reassurance comes after fresh doubts over Chelle’s position, with The PUNCH reporting that he had not yet signed the improved contract extension offered by the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation.

That distinction is important.

The safe reading is not that Chelle has signed a new deal, but that Nigerian sports authorities say an agreement is in place and paperwork is expected to follow.

Chelle’s position has drawn attention because of his early work with the Super Eagles and the wider coaching market in Africa. Reports have linked him with Algeria and some North African clubs, but those links remain reported interest rather than an official departure process.

The NFF announced Chelle’s original appointment in January 2025, with the federation presenting him as the new Super Eagles head coach and promising support for his assignment.

The current discussion is about whether the Nigeria project will continue under improved terms.

According to The PUNCH, Chelle has managed 25 Super Eagles matches in just over a year, including 15 competitive fixtures. The report said he recorded 10 wins in regulation time from those competitive games, while the remaining results included one penalty-shootout win, two penalty-shootout defeats and two draws.

The contract discussion is also understood to include improved financial terms and stronger support for the technical crew. However, reported salary figures should remain treated as reported terms because there has been no official published contract confirmation from the NFF or NSC.

The PUNCH reported that Chelle requested $130,000 per month, while the NSC was willing to offer $100,000 and separately cover the salaries of his assistants. Other Nigerian outlets have carried cautionary versions of the contract story, including reports that the renewal claim was premature or unresolved.

That makes the wording sensitive. Nigeria can report that its sports authorities are confident Chelle is focused on the Super Eagles. It cannot safely report, without official confirmation, that the coach has signed a new long-term deal.

Chelle has also publicly indicated his desire to keep working with the national team.

“I try to do my job and I want to say thank you for all the support. If I have some time, I will give everything for this national team,” Chelle said during Nigeria’s June international friendlies.

For Nigeria, the issue goes beyond one contract.

Chelle’s future sits inside a larger question about continuity after another painful World Cup cycle and the pressure to build a stronger Super Eagles team for the next AFCON campaign.

The NSC’s message is clear: Nigeria does not believe the coach is being pulled away by outside interest.

But until the paperwork is signed and officially announced, the story remains one of confidence, negotiation and pending documentation — not final closure.
