NBA, Civil Groups Blast Ibom Air Over Passenger Assault, Lifetime Ban

By IDNN Aviation Desk

ABUJA — Outrage has swept across Nigeria after a viral video captured aviation security officials dragging a partially stripped female passenger, Comfort Emmanson, off an Ibom Air flight, prompting fierce condemnation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), civil society groups, and political leaders.

The incident, which occurred on August 10, has ignited a national debate over passenger rights, the limits of airline authority, and whether the aviation sector applies justice evenly to all travellers.

In the footage, Emmanson appears to be forcibly restrained as her top is torn, exposing her upper body, while bystanders protest. Though she is seen slapping and taunting a female crew member, her account of the events has not been publicly heard.

The NBA, in a strongly worded statement signed by President Mazi Afam Osigwe and General Secretary Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, called the treatment “a grave affront to the rule of law.” The association condemned the lifetime flight ban imposed by Ibom Air and enforced by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), saying only statutory regulators have the authority to apply such sanctions.

“No person, regardless of the circumstances, should be treated in such a degrading and humiliating manner,”

“No person, regardless of the circumstances, should be treated in such a degrading and humiliating manner,”

the NBA declared, accusing the airline of possible false imprisonment for allegedly preventing Emmanson from disembarking before the confrontation escalated.

Civil society echoed the outrage. Project Alert on Violence Against Women said the incident highlighted “double standards” in aviation discipline, contrasting Emmanson’s swift arrest and imprisonment with the treatment of Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1), who recently disrupted a ValueJet flight but received only a temporary ban after an apology.

“This undermines public trust and sets a dangerous precedent,” said Project Alert’s Executive Director, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, calling for uniform protocols, mandatory de-escalation training for aviation staff, and equal enforcement regardless of social status.

Political voices also entered the fray. Labour Party Interim National Chair Nenadi Usman accused the government of “shameful double standards,” while activist Aisha Yesufu blasted Nigeria’s “two-tier justice system” in a widely shared video.

Ibom Air denies releasing the footage, suggesting it may have been leaked by third parties near the aircraft. The airline claims Emmanson was restrained only after becoming violent and ignoring instructions to leave.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) maintains the case differs from KWAM 1’s because Ibom Air pursued legal action while ValueJet did not. But with mounting public pressure and fresh intervention from Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, the airline and AON have now agreed to withdraw their complaints and lift the lifetime ban — paving the way for Emmanson’s release from Kirikiri Prison this week.

The controversy has become a lightning rod for broader concerns over fairness, dignity, and accountability in Nigeria’s aviation industry, with calls for systemic reform gaining momentum.
