NAPTIP Warns About Fake Jobs and Trafficking Recruitment

NAPTIP warns traffickers exploit fake jobs and social relationships

Agency urges Nigerians to verify employment offers and identities, citing recruitment approaches in gyms and other social settings.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has warned that traffickers use fraudulent employment offers and social relationships to recruit people into exploitation.

NAPTIP spokesperson Adekoye Vincent issued the warning during a joint security briefing in Abuja on Thursday, November 5, according to reports by PUNCH and P.M. News. He urged people to verify those offering work, financial assistance or other opportunities.

How recruiters misuse trust

PUNCH reported that the spokesperson described approaches in gyms, recreational centres and other social environments. According to the agency’s account, recruiters may initially present themselves as helpful service providers, offering assistance with shopping, household needs or everyday difficulties.

The purpose, he said, is to establish familiarity and make themselves appear dependable before exploiting the relationship.

The warning describes tactics attributed to recruiters. It does not establish that ordinary social contact or an offer of assistance indicates criminal intent.

Fake jobs can conceal exploitation

P.M. News reported that NAPTIP also highlighted fraudulent online employment advertisements. The spokesperson said the agency had encountered cases involving people who travelled considerable distances for supposed work opportunities and were subsequently exploited.

The agency urged Nigerians to verify employment offers and the identities of people presenting opportunities before making arrangements, according to the published accounts.

The reports reviewed did not provide figures establishing how frequently recruitment occurs in gyms or other recreational settings.

IDNN’s report is based on published coverage of the November 5 briefing; an original statement or complete recording was not available for independent review.
