Emir Sanusi Invited by Police Over Sallah Procession Amid Tension in Kano

Emir Sanusi Police Invitation Sparks Tension Over Sallah Day Procession in Kano

By IDNN News Desk

The controversial Emir Sanusi police invitation has triggered unease across Kano. The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been summoned by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to appear in Abuja over incidents tied to the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

According to a letter dated April 4, 2025, signed by Commissioner of Police (Operations), Olajide Ibitoye, the Emir is expected at the Force Intelligence Department Headquarters by 10 a.m. on Tuesday. This invitation has raised fresh concerns about political interference and traditional leadership rights in Kano.

Emir Sanusi Police Invitation Linked to Sallah Procession Controversy

Sources close to the police confirmed that the Emir Sanusi police invitation is connected to a Sallah Day procession that allegedly violated a police ban. During the event, clashes occurred, resulting in a fatality and the arrest of a man, Usman Sagiru, who allegedly attacked members of the Emir’s security detail.

Still, locals insist that what occurred wasn’t a Durbar but a traditional post-prayer horse ride from the mosque to the palace—a common Eid practice.

“This wasn’t a Durbar. The Emir has always ridden his horse on Eid day—it’s part of our heritage,” one resident explained.

Kano Residents Slam Police Over Emir Sanusi Summons

Many Kano residents view the Emir Sanusi police invitation as a dangerous political tactic. According to some, it could be an attempt to weaken Sanusi’s influence or create a crisis that might justify a state of emergency in Kano.

“Why target the Emir over a peaceful tradition?” one resident asked.
“This smells of a calculated move to cause unrest,” another warned.

Community leaders and civil society advocates have called for calm but demand transparency and fairness in how authorities handle the situation.

Culture vs. Control: Police Directives Clash with Tradition

The police had banned all Durbar and public gatherings on Eid day, citing security concerns. However, the ban clashed with age-old customs. Many believe the police overstepped, especially since no public evidence has linked Emir Sanusi to any lawbreaking.

Critics say this isn’t just about a Durbar—it’s about the growing power struggle between traditional rulers and state machinery.

🔍 What’s Next for the Emir and Kano?

As Emir Sanusi prepares to meet the IGP in Abuja, the entire country watches closely. The outcome could either ease tension or inflame Kano’s already fragile political climate.

Clearly, the Emir Sanusi police invitation is more than a routine inquiry—it’s a flashpoint in the battle for cultural identity, political control, and regional peace.

💬 What’s Your Take?

Should traditional rulers be subject to police summons over cultural processions?
Is this a fair application of law—or political intimidation?
