Kano Drug Task Force Reports 380 Arrests, Over 230 Convictions

Kano Task Force Says Over 380 Arrested, 230 Convictions Secured in Drug Crackdown

The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking says it has arrested more than 380 suspects and secured over 230 convictions since its inauguration on July 22.

Task-force chairman Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado announced the figures at a September 22 briefing in Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf repeated the figures on October 1 while describing the campaign as part of the state’s wider effort against drug abuse, illicit trafficking, thuggery and related criminal activity.

The totals are official figures supplied by the task force and state government.

IDNN has not independently audited the underlying arrest or court records.

Joint operations target drug joints and criminal hideouts

Rimin-Gado said the task force had carried out joint operations across Kano to dismantle drug joints and other locations linked to illicit substances and related criminal activity.

Officials said the operations led to the recovery of substances including cannabis, Exol-5, Diazepam, Pentazocine, Tramadol and Pregabalin.

The task force also reported recovering locally made weapons during some operations.

Areas identified in the official account include Race Course, Filin Idi, Filin Mahaha, Tashar Rami, Kawo and Tashar Rimi.

Arrests and convictions are not the same count

The task force says more than 380 suspects have been arrested and over 230 convictions secured.

Those figures should not be read as meaning every person arrested was convicted.

The available public reporting does not provide a complete case-by-case breakdown connecting each arrest to a particular prosecution, court, offence, sentence or appeal status.

It also indicates that the task force’s operations cover more than drug offences alone.

Officials have referred to thuggery, phone snatching and other related cases alongside drug enforcement.

IDNN is therefore not treating all 380-plus arrests or all 230-plus convictions as drug-only cases without a source-specific breakdown.

Children removed from harmful exposure

Rimin-Gado said 43 underage children involved in street scavenging had been removed from an environment where they were allegedly exposed to intoxicating substances.

He said the children received medical attention, counselling and treatment, with efforts underway to reunite some of them with their families.

The task force also said two dealers were convicted for exposing the children to intoxicants.

Because minors are involved, IDNN is not identifying them or publishing details that could expose them.

Rehabilitation runs alongside enforcement

The task force says about 125 people have been referred to the Kano State Reformatory Institute in Kiru for rehabilitation.

Rimin-Gado said demand had filled the Kiru facility to capacity and that the state government provided an additional rehabilitation facility in Tofa Local Government Area.

The task force says its longer-term target is to remove up to 10,000 youths from harmful street environments and provide rehabilitation, skills acquisition and reintegration support.

That 10,000 figure is a programme target, not a number already rehabilitated.

Accountability questions remain

The scale of the official figures raises several questions that require more detailed public records:

How many of the 380-plus arrests resulted in formal charges? Which offences account for the 230-plus convictions? Which courts handled the cases? What sentences were imposed? And what outcomes are being recorded for people referred to rehabilitation?

Until fuller court and programme records are available, the strongest safe position remains:

Kano’s task force says more than 380 suspects have been arrested and over 230 convictions secured since July, but those totals remain official aggregates without a complete publicly available case-by-case breakdown.
