Tiafoe Rises From Two Sets Down, Sets Up Explosive US Open Semi-Final With Shelton

Frances Tiafoe was one set from disappearing from the US Open.

By the end of the night, he had dragged himself back from two sets down, survived Alex Michelsen in five brutal sets and booked an all-American semi-final with Ben Shelton.

Tiafoe won 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(6), turning a quarter-final that had been slipping out of his hands into one of the defining survival acts of his New York run.

The consequence

It is bigger than one comeback. Tiafoe now stands one victory from his first Grand Slam final, with Shelton waiting on the other side of a semi-final that guarantees an American man a place in the US Open title match.

For much of the first half of the contest, that possibility looked distant.

Michelsen took the opening two sets, held control through the key exchanges and moved within sight of the biggest Grand Slam result of his career when he served for the match at 5-4 in the third.

That was the moment the match turned.

Tiafoe broke back, took the third set and changed the emotional temperature inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

From there, the pressure shifted.

He forced a fourth set, took it, and dragged Michelsen into a decider. Even with that, the younger American still refused to break.

Michelsen moved 3-0 ahead in the fifth.

Tiafoe came again.

The match eventually reached a deciding tiebreak, and after almost four hours and 40 minutes, Tiafoe completed a recovery that sent him into the third Grand Slam semi-final of his career; all three at the US Open.

The story resets around Shelton

Shelton booked his own place in the last four by eliminating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7), creating an all-American collision with a place in the final at stake.

That changes the pressure completely.

Tiafoe is no longer fighting merely to survive another night.

He is fighting Shelton for the biggest final of his career.

And after recovering from two sets down, losing control again in the fifth and still finding a way through, Tiafoe arrives at that semi-final carrying something dangerous:

proof that this US Open run can survive chaos.

Michelsen had him near the edge.

Tiafoe refused to fall.

Now Shelton gets the next shot.
