PDP Crisis Is Elitist, Didn’t Touch the Grassroots – Jerry Gana Declares

Byline: IDNN News Politics

ABUJA —In the midst of spiraling defections and a fractured opposition, Professor Jerry Gana, a founding father of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has issued a rallying cry — and a subtle warning.

According to him, the ongoing internal crisis shaking the PDP is “an elite distraction” that has failed to crack the party’s foundation at the grassroots.

“When this recent problem happened, it was really among a few elites here in Abuja. It didn’t even go beyond,” Gana said

PDP Grassroots Strength Remains Intact

Gana reminded Nigerians that the PDP was born from the grassroots and retains deep political roots in wards, polling units, and local governments across the country.

“We were in every polling unit in 1998,” he said. “We won the presidency, Senate, House, and majority of local governments. That’s not a fluke. That’s history.”

He noted that despite recent upheavals, defections, and leadership tussles, the PDP’s nationwide structure remains resilient and ready to reassert itself.

Power to the People Still Resonates

“When we said ‘power to the people’, we meant it,” Gana added, referencing the party’s iconic slogan. “The PDP wasn’t just a slogan machine — it delivered.”

In reminding Nigerians of the party’s legacy in restoring civil rule and ending military dictatorship, Gana positioned the PDP not just as a political machine — but as an institution woven into Nigeria’s democratic rebirth.

 Elite Squabbles vs Grassroots Realities

Gana downplayed the significance of high-level quarrels and called on Nigerians to differentiate elite drama from party collapse.

“What you see on TV is not the whole story,” he said. “PDP is alive where it matters — with the people.”

While many observers have painted the PDP as rudderless amid the rise of third-force coalitions, Gana insists the party’s core base remains unmoved, waiting for a clear path forward.

IDNN Takeaway

In a political landscape swirling with defections and chaos, Jerry Gana has stepped forward with a defiant counterpunch:

PDP isn’t dead. It’s just noisy in Abuja.
