IGP Drops Legal Bomb: Retired Police Chiefs Charged with Age Falsification, Forgery & Pension Fraud

Date: June 1, 2025 | Category: Anti-Corruption & Law Enforcement | Byline: IDNN Security Oversight & Legal Affairs Desk

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has filed a sweeping 14-count criminal charge against several retired senior police officers, accusing them of forging birth records, falsifying age, and fraudulently manipulating their exit benefits under the Police Pension Scheme.

The charges, now before a federal court, represent the most aggressive internal anti-corruption move ever initiated by a serving police boss against top-ranking retirees.

“The rule of law must not discriminate — not even within the Force,” a senior legal officer at Force Headquarters told IDNN.

The Accused: Who’s on the Hook?

Though official names have not been released pending court proceedings, sources close to the matter confirm that:

  • The officers involved served at the rank of Commissioners and AIGs

  • They are accused of forging age declaration documents

  • Some received post-retirement packages running into millions based on manipulated records

One defendant reportedly altered their birth year by up to 7 years using affidavits from defunct local government secretariats.

Breakdown of Charges

The 14-count charge includes:

  • Conspiracy to commit forgery

  • Criminal breach of trust

  • Obtaining benefits under false pretenses

  • Tampering with national records

  • Fraudulent pension accrual and abuse of position

The Force Legal Unit confirmed that the case will be prosecuted under the Police Act, the Criminal Code, and the Pensions Reform Act.

A New Era of Internal Discipline?

Legal experts are hailing the move as a litmus test for institutional accountability, but skeptics warn of political undertones or selective prosecution.

“This is either a game-changer or a witch-hunt,” said Barr. Mariam Jibril, a criminal justice advocate. “But either way, the Police must not blink.”

A parallel audit of recent retirements across Police Commands has also begun, IDNN has learned.
