Chelsea part company with Liam Rosenior after sharp late-season slide

Chelsea have parted company with Liam Rosenior after a brutal collapse in form dragged the club deeper into trouble in the final stretch of the season. The club confirmed the decision on Wednesday and said Calum McFarlane will lead the team on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.

Club pulls the trigger after results crash

Chelsea said recent results and performances fell below the standards required, even with major targets still in play. In its official statement, the club thanked Rosenior and his staff, then said it would begin a process of “self-reflection” as it looks for a longer-term answer in the dugout.

Rosenior lasted less than four months in the role after taking over in January following Enzo Maresca’s departure. He had signed a deal that ran until 2032, but Chelsea moved before season’s end after seven defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions.

Brighton loss turned pressure into action

The final blow came after Chelsea lost 3-0 at Brighton. That defeat dropped them behind Brighton into seventh place and left them seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who still have a game in hand. Chelsea also arrive at this change on the back of five straight league defeats without scoring, their worst such run since 1912.

Reuters also reported that Chelsea fans called for Rosenior’s dismissal during the Brighton defeat. After the match, Rosenior said he could not defend the performance, which made the pressure around his job even harder to contain.

McFarlane takes over with key games ahead

Chelsea have now turned back to McFarlane, who will oversee the side for the rest of the season. The club said he will work with the existing backroom staff as Chelsea try to push for European qualification and stay alive in the FA Cup. Reuters added that the change comes just before an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United on Sunday.

This means Chelsea have chosen speed over patience. Rosenior arrived as a long-term fix, but results crushed that plan fast. Now the club must try to salvage its season while also proving it can make a more stable choice next time.
