Swift Response Prevents Tragedy as Gas Fire Breaks Out at Gateway Games Venue

ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — May 21, 2025 | IDNN

Tension rippled through the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, one of the key venues of the National Sports Festival (NSF) 2025, after a fire incident triggered by a gas-related explosion briefly disrupted activities on Wednesday afternoon.

According to eyewitness reports, the blaze erupted shortly after 3:00 p.m. when a fuel delivery vehicle ignited near the complex’s power supply station, prompting panic among athletes, officials, and spectators.

Emergency Teams Act Swiftly

Security and safety personnel deployed for the festival immediately activated containment protocols. Within minutes, firefighters and emergency responders were on the scene to douse the flames, and evacuate nearby areas.

No casualties or serious injuries were reported.

“The fire was immediately put out, and there is no cause for alarm,” said Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy.
“We are prioritizing the safety of all festival participants.”

Clarifying the Incident

Initial fears of a gas tanker explosion were clarified by authorities. Akinmade confirmed that it was a diesel truck delivering fuel for backup power generation that caught fire due to a suspected pressure spark.

Games Continue Uninterrupted

Despite the scare, events at the Alake Sports Complex resumed shortly after clearance, with athletes and fans commending the professionalism of the emergency services.

“It could’ve been worse, but the response was sharp,” said one volleyball team official. “That gives us confidence in the safety planning around these Games.”

The Ogun State Government reiterated its assurance that safety protocols remain robust and all sporting venues are under continuous monitoring.
