Five injured after truck hits buses at Berger in Lagos

Five injured as truck hits two commercial buses at Lagos Berger

Five passengers were seriously injured after a 40-foot truck struck two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, in Lagos on Tuesday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the crash involved an interstate Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace carrying passengers.

LASTMA said its officials rescued five seriously injured people — three women and two men, including a driver — and took them to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for treatment.

Police officers from Isheri Division also assisted at the scene.

Crash triggers heavy traffic

The collision caused heavy congestion along the corridor, with traffic queues stretching towards Otedola Bridge.

LASTMA said the truck and the two buses were later removed from the carriageway to prevent further incidents and restore traffic flow.

The vehicles were handed over to police for further investigation.

Brake failure cited, investigation continues

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps at the scene said the truck suffered brake failure before striking the buses.

LASTMA separately said the truck reportedly lost control.

Both remain official accounts of what happened, rather than a final technical finding on the cause of the crash.

The police investigation will need to establish whether mechanical failure, driver control, vehicle condition or another factor contributed to the collision.

Roadworthiness back in focus

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki urged operators of articulated and other heavy-duty vehicles to prioritise maintenance, roadworthiness and compliance with traffic regulations.

For commuters, the crash brought two immediate consequences: five serious injuries and another major disruption along one of Lagos’ busiest traffic corridors.

The next accountability question is whether investigators can establish why the truck lost control — and whether any preventable mechanical or road-safety failure played a role.
