EFCC arraigns woman over alleged ₦31.062m visa fraud

EFCC arraigns woman over alleged ₦31m, foreign-currency visa fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned Modupe Oriyomi Ativie before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt over allegations involving ₦31.062 million, $3,600 and €1,815.

Ativie appeared before Justice A.T. Muhammed on a five-count charge involving allegations of advance fee fraud and obtaining money by false pretence.

She pleaded not guilty.

The allegations remain part of the prosecution case and have not been established as facts by the court.

EFCC alleges Canada visa-employment scheme

According to the EFCC, Ativie and Eudora and Aegle Management Consulting Limited allegedly collected money from complainants under the representation that Canada visa-sponsored employment would be secured for them.

One count alleges that ₦8.58 million was obtained from a complainant.

Another alleges about ₦22.482 million.

The prosecution also listed alleged payments of $3,600 and €1,815.

Those figures are allegations before the court, not judicial findings.

Ativie pleads not guilty

Ativie pleaded not guilty when the charges were read.

The court has not made any finding of guilt.

The prosecution will have to prove its allegations through the judicial process, while the defence is entitled to challenge the evidence presented.

Court remands defendant pending bail ruling

Following the arraignment, the court ordered Ativie remanded in EFCC custody.

The matter was adjourned to October 16, 2026, for ruling on her bail application.

The remand order does not amount to a conviction and should not be presented as a final refusal of bail.

Court process becomes next test

The next significant development is the October 16 bail ruling and, if the case proceeds, the evidence supporting the five charges.

For now, the established position is limited: the EFCC has arraigned Ativie on five charges, she has pleaded not guilty, and the case remains before the court.
