FIFA’s Gianni Infantino Reassures on Mexico’s World Cup Hosting Amid Violence Concerns

FIFA president Gianni Infantino reassured the international community about Mexico’s readiness to host World Cup games despite recent violence linked to the killing of a drug cartel leader.

Speaking in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino expressed his confidence in Mexico’s ability to safely host World Cup matches. “Very reassured, everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular,” Infantino told AFP, offering a calm response after the deadly aftermath of the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.

The violence in Mexico, particularly in Guadalajara, stemmed from the military operation to capture Oseguera, which led to cartel members attacking multiple areas, including roadblocks, fires, and clashes with security forces. At least 74 people were killed, and the violent scenes were broadcast globally just months before the World Cup, raising concerns about the safety of fans and participants.

Reassurances from FIFA and Mexican Officials

Infantino’s reassurances come after images of violence spread worldwide, drawing attention to potential risks for the World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada in 2026.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum immediately responded to these concerns, offering full guarantees for the safety of World Cup fans, stating there was “no risk” to those attending the tournament. She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring security during the event.

“Everything will be under control for the World Cup,” Sheinbaum said, echoing Infantino’s sentiments about the safety of fans.

Guadalajara’s Role and Safety Measures

Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, will host four group-stage matches during the World Cup. It will also play a key role in the qualification process, co-hosting the playoff tournament with Monterrey to determine the final two teams for the 2026 tournament.

Infantino and Sheinbaum’s statements were aimed at calming fears and providing clarity about security measures in place for the World Cup. The assurances are critical in maintaining public confidence ahead of the highly anticipated event, as Mexico prepares for its pivotal role in what promises to be a historic World Cup.

Looking Forward

Despite the recent violence, the focus now shifts to the continued preparations for the 2026 World Cup. With Infantino and Mexican officials expressing confidence in the safety measures, the event is set to move forward with the aim of delivering a world-class tournament that showcases the best of global football.
