Ekiti Police Officers Face Disciplinary Action Over Viral Extortion Complaint

Ekiti Police Officers Face Discipline in Abuja Over Viral Extortion Complaint

Police officers attached to the Ekiti State Command are undergoing disciplinary proceedings at Force Headquarters in Abuja after a complaint alleging extortion and intimidation during an encounter with a motorcyclist.

The Police Complaint Response Unit said the officers shown in a viral video had been brought to Abuja for disciplinary action following a directive from police authorities.

The proceedings do not amount to a finding that the officers committed extortion.

The underlying allegations remain under investigation.

According to the complaint update, the case is being tracked under reference number CRU100953.

Complaint Followed Viral Encounter

The case began after representatives of the Biker Association at Federal University Oye-Ekiti submitted a complaint to the Ekiti State Police Command.

The association alleged that one of its members was intercepted by a police patrol team while riding from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti and was subjected to a demand for money.

The Ekiti State Police Command later said the officers involved had been identified and taken into custody for questioning.

The command said the investigation covered allegations including extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other forms of unprofessional conduct.

Those remain allegations rather than established findings.

Police Say Case Moved to Abuja

The Ekiti State Police Command said the matter was initially transferred to the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for investigation.

The Police Complaint Response Unit later said the officers were at Force Headquarters in Abuja undergoing disciplinary proceedings.

Police authorities had earlier directed that the officers be subjected to disciplinary procedures in line with service regulations, subject to the outcome of the investigation.

The police also said officers are not authorised to demand or collect money from members of the public while carrying out legitimate duties.

What the Viral Footage Establishes โ€” and What It Does Not

PUNCH reported that the viral footage shows a confrontation between a motorcyclist and a police officer during what appears to be a roadworthiness-related stop.

The report said the rider appeared to resist a reported demand for โ‚ฆ20,000.

Text accompanying the video also alleged that the officer threatened the rider.

Those details remain part of the reported complaint and video context.

The footage does not, by itself, conclusively establish every allegation surrounding the encounter.

The police investigation and disciplinary process must determine whether any officer improperly demanded money, intimidated the rider or violated service rules.

Accountability Now Turns on the Outcome

The central question now moves beyond the viral video.

The accountability issue is whether the police will disclose the outcome of the investigation, whether disciplinary findings will be made and what action, if any, will follow.

As of the latest information reviewed by IDNN, the police had not announced a final investigative outcome or specific sanctions.

That distinction matters.

Disciplinary proceedings show that the complaint is being formally examined. They do not prove that the allegations have already been established.

For the Nigeria Police Force, the next credibility test will be the transparency of the final finding and whether the public is told clearly what the process determined.
