FG Proposes Harmonised 2027 Exam Calendar as Candidates Await Final Dates
The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised timetable for major external examinations in 2027 as education authorities seek to reduce clashes and ensure results are released early enough for tertiary admissions.
The Federal Ministry of Education says the proposed schedule covers the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, NECO Senior School Certificate Examination, WAEC West African Senior School Certificate Examination, NABTEB examinations and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies examinations.
But candidates should not treat the dates as final.
The Ministry labels the schedule a proposed 2027 examination timetable, and candidates should still await final detailed announcements from the respective examination bodies.
Proposed Dates Start With UTME in March
Under the Ministry’s current proposal, the 2027 UTME would hold from March 15 to March 25.
NECO’s SSCE is proposed for April 1 to May 14, while WAEC’s WASSCE would run from May 11 to June 18.
NABTEB examinations are proposed for June 1 to July 5, while NBAIS examinations would run from June 10 to July 9.
The Ministry says UTME results are targeted for release in March, while results from the other listed examination bodies are targeted for August.
Government Says the Aim Is to Reduce Clashes
The Federal Ministry of Education says the harmonisation exercise is intended to minimise clashes between major national examinations and align result releases more closely with the tertiary admission cycle.
The Ministry says the goal is to have eligible candidates able to begin admission processes by September without being held back by delayed examination results.
The coordination involved representatives of JAMB, NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS at a meeting convened by the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, in Abuja.
One Proposed Overlap Still Needs Attention
The proposed timetable does not eliminate every possible clash.
NECO’s proposed examination period runs until May 14, while WAEC’s proposed WASSCE schedule begins on May 11.
That creates a four-day overlap between the proposed NECO and WAEC examination windows.
The overlap does not necessarily mean individual subject papers will clash, because detailed subject timetables have not been established in the Ministry’s summary schedule.
But it underlines why further coordination will still be required before candidates can rely on the dates as final.
August Is a Target, Not a Guaranteed Release Date
The Ministry says NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS results are targeted for August 2027.
That target is important for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions, but it should not be interpreted as a guaranteed result-release date for every examination body.
Actual release dates will depend on the conduct of the examinations, marking, processing and the final arrangements adopted by each body.
The Ministry says it will continue engaging examination bodies to strengthen coordination, accountability and adherence to agreed timelines.
Candidates Should Wait for Final Confirmation
For students, parents and schools, the proposed timetable provides an early planning framework.
It gives candidates an indication of how the 2027 examination season may be structured and signals the government’s intention to reduce the scheduling problems that can complicate admissions.
But the safest action for candidates is to continue monitoring official announcements from JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS.
The dates currently published by the Federal Ministry of Education are a government coordination proposal, not a substitute for the final detailed timetable issued by each examination authority.
Until those final calendars are released, candidates should use the proposed dates for planning — not as irreversible examination dates.
