Edo APC Chairman Faces Backlash Over Alleged Threat to Facebook Critic

Screenshots that ignited controversy

The acting chairman of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Jarrett Tenebe, has come under public scrutiny following circulation of screenshots allegedly showing him threatening a Facebook user.

The user, identified as Blessing P. Agho, had posted criticisms of Governor Monday Okpebholo before sharing what she described as direct messages from Tenebe.

The messages at the centre of the storm

In screenshots widely shared on social media, the APC chairman is alleged to have sent messages warning that “death awaits you” and challenging the critic to reveal her location.

The authenticity of the screenshots has not been independently verified by law enforcement authorities. However, the posts have generated widespread reaction, with many social media users questioning whether the messages constitute criminal intimidation.

Tenebe has not publicly issued a formal response at the time of filing this report.

Public reaction and calls for inquiry

The controversy has prompted calls for security agencies to investigate the matter. Online commentators have argued that political officeholders must exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law, even when facing criticism.

Critics also referenced previous public remarks attributed to Tenebe in which he pledged unqualified loyalty to the state governor, statements that had earlier drawn attention on social media.

Digital speech and political accountability

The incident highlights growing tensions between political actors and critics in Nigeria’s digital space. As social media becomes an increasingly central arena for public discourse, disputes that might once have remained private now carry broader implications for political accountability.

Legal experts note that threats, if substantiated, could attract criminal liability under existing laws governing harassment and intimidation.

Why this moment carries institutional weight

The matter goes beyond a single exchange on Facebook. It touches on how political leaders respond to dissent and whether public office amplifies responsibility in digital interactions. The speed at which the alleged messages circulated underscores the reputational risk that now accompanies online communication.

What formal scrutiny could determine

If law enforcement agencies open an investigation, the focus will likely centre on authentication of the messages and assessment of intent. If no formal action follows, the episode may remain a flashpoint in Edo’s political climate without legal consequence.

For now, the controversy places political conduct in the digital age under renewed examination.
