14 ARRESTED AFTER PROTEST TURNS DEADLY IN BENUE, TRUCK DRIVER BURNT ALIVE

By IDNN Security & Civil Order Desk

What began as a peaceful protest over the mass killings in Benue State spiraled into tragedy as hoodlums hijacked the demonstration, burned a truck, and killed its driver in Apir, a community on the outskirts of Makurdi.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued Sunday by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, revealing that 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the deadly turn of events.

“The suspects obstructed a roadway in Apir, forcefully stopped a truck, and set it ablaze with the driver still inside,” Edet stated.

POLICE ENGAGEMENT, FAILED DIALOGUE

Earlier on Sunday, demonstrators gathered at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi to protest the massacre of over 200 civilians across Guma and Daudu. Among the protesters’ demands were presidential action, improved security, and justice for victims.

Police said tactical teams were deployed to maintain order, and that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, alongside Deputy Governor Barr. John Ode, attempted to address the crowd.

“Unfortunately, the crowd declined to be addressed and became increasingly hostile,” police said.

In an effort to prevent an escalation, security forces deployed non-lethal crowd control, including water cannons and smoke.

HIJACKED BY HOODLUMS

Hours after the dispersal, a group described by police as “sympathisers and violent elements” took over the protest, blocked Apir road, and committed the horrific act of arson that led to the truck driver’s death.

Police described the killing as “murder in the name of protest”, warning that future protests would be closely monitored and anyone attempting to exploit civil actions would face the full weight of the law.

Investigations are ongoing to identify other culprits and instigators.

POLICE: WE SUPPORT LAWFUL PROTESTS, NOT VIOLENCE

In its concluding remarks, the police reaffirmed support for civic engagement but condemned violence.

“We commend responsible protesters but condemn lawlessness and destruction,” the statement read. “The 14 arrested individuals will be prosecuted accordingly.”
