Nine Killed in Kuru Bus Attack as Plateau Security Response Intensifies
Nine people were reported killed after gunmen attacked a commercial bus at Dungus Junction in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, as security authorities stepped up their response to a fresh cycle of attacks across parts of the state.
Premium Times reported that the attack happened on the night of September 13 as the Jos-bound bus stopped to drop passengers. Channels Television also reported nine deaths from the Kuru incident.
The Plateau State Government has separately confirmed attacks in parts of Mangu on September 12 and what it described as a tragic incident at Dungus Junction, Kuru, the following day. Its statement acknowledged deaths and injuries but did not give a consolidated casualty figure.
Wider Death Toll Remains Unsettled
Different reports have produced different wider casualty totals because they cover different incidents and time periods.
Channels Television reported at least 13 deaths across attacks in Jos South, Mangu and Riyom, while other reports have cited higher totals over a broader period.
IDNN is therefore not treating any of those wider figures as a reconciled statewide death toll.
The nine deaths at Kuru remain the clearest incident-specific figure in the current reporting.
Security Response Expands
The Plateau State Police Command announced that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu was scheduled to visit the state on September 16 to assess police formations, strengthen security collaboration and engage stakeholders.
Separately, Chief of Army Staff Waidi Shaibu visited Plateau after the Kuru attack, according to Premium Times, amid renewed concern over insecurity in affected communities.
The Plateau State Government says it is working with security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders through intelligence sharing, community engagement and other preventive measures. It has also urged residents to avoid reprisals and cooperate with security agencies.
Accountability Beyond High-Level Visits
The immediate accountability question is whether the intensified security response produces measurable improvements for communities facing repeated attacks.
For residents, the test is not only the number of official visits or security announcements, but whether attacks are prevented, credible arrests are made and people can move and carry out daily activities more safely.
