Arsenal reach Champions League semi-finals but Sporting display sparks questions

Arsenal have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the second straight season, but their goalless draw with Sporting has opened a fresh debate over whether Mikel Arteta’s side are playing with enough force at the biggest stage. The 0-0 result at the Emirates sent Arsenal through 1-0 on aggregate after Kai Havertz’s stoppage-time goal in the first leg decided the tie.

Qualification alone gives Arsenal a major lift. It keeps their European run alive and sets up a semi-final against Atletico Madrid, with Arteta’s side trying to reach the final for the first time since 2006. But the mood around the second leg was not driven only by relief. It was driven by the feeling that Arsenal escaped rather than dominated.

Arsenal produced only one shot on target across the night and lacked attacking fluency for long periods. Sporting looked capable of forcing extra time, with Geny Catamo striking the post before the break and Joao Simoes going close late on. Arsenal also hit the woodwork through Leandro Trossard, but the performance did not fully silence concerns about control, incision, and sharpness in front of goal.

Arsenal did enough to progress, but not enough to end the argument. At this stage of the Champions League, qualification matters most. Yet performances also shape belief, and this one left a split impression: disciplined at the back, but far from free-flowing in attack. Arsenal’s defensive solidity has remained a major strength, with eight clean sheets in 12 Champions League matches this season.

Arteta chose to focus on commitment and resilience after the final whistle. He praised his players for grinding through a demanding period and valued the significance of reaching back-to-back semi-finals. That gives Arsenal an obvious positive frame. The counterpoint is just as strong: if Sporting created the better openings on the night, then Arsenal still have work to do before facing Atletico Madrid.

There is also a timing issue around the result. Arsenal are not moving into a calm stretch. Noni Madueke could be an injury concern ahead of a major Premier League clash with Manchester City, which means the debate around the Sporting display will not disappear quickly. Instead, it is likely to carry into the next few days as fans judge whether progression alone is enough, or whether the warning signs matter more.

For now, the hard fact is simple: Arsenal are through. They have earned the semi-final place, but the performance has kept the conversation alive rather than closed it.
