Ex-Benue councillor remanded over alleged assault, attempted culpable homicide
A former councillor representing Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, Daniel Ujah, has been remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre over allegations bordering on assault, causing grievous hurt and attempted culpable homicide.
Ujah, 43, appeared before Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo after being arraigned by the Nigeria Police.
Current court reporting says the case also includes allegations bordering on criminal trespass, intimidation and criminal force.
The allegations have not been proved.
Remand does not amount to conviction.
Case linked to police First Information Report
The case is tied to a First Information Report marked CR33/2026.
According to current reporting, the FIR followed a petition submitted by Rebecca Adole to the Area Commander’s Office of the Nigeria Police in Otukpo.
The alleged incident occurred on August 28 at Akwutulo, Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area.
Police allege that Ujah entered the compound of Adole’s mother, Amina Iduh, and assaulted her.
The FIR further contains allegations that injuries were sustained during the incident.
Those remain police allegations and have not been established by the court.
Ujah pleads not guilty
Current reports say Ujah pleaded not guilty when the matter came before the court.
His counsel applied for bail.
The prosecution opposed the application.
The presiding magistrate, Hasia Garuba, ordered that Ujah be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
