One injured in Wuse II building incident as NEMA says structure was ‘partially pulled down’
One worker sustained minor injuries in an incident involving a five-storey building under construction on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.
NEMA said its Abuja Operations Office received an alert at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, and activated responders, including the FCT Fire Service.
The agency said an emergency ambulance team was deployed to coordinate search and rescue operations at the site.
According to NEMA, findings at the scene showed that the incident was minor and involved a five-storey building under construction that had been “partially pulled down.”
No death was recorded, the agency said, while the injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
What happened remains unclear
Available information does not establish why part of the structure had been pulled down, whether demolition work was underway before emergency responders arrived, or whether an independent structural failure occurred.
The building’s development approval, ownership, engineering supervision and inspection history were also not established in the verified information available at the time of this report.
Those records are necessary before any conclusion can be reached about structural safety, regulatory compliance or responsibility.
Abuja building safety under scrutiny
The incident follows other building emergencies in the Federal Capital Territory, although those cases do not establish what caused the Durban Street event.
In September, a three-storey building in Wuse Zone 4 collapsed after FCTA Development Control had reportedly issued occupants a quit notice over signs of structural distress. No casualties were recorded.
The Durban Street incident now leaves a more immediate set of questions for authorities: what work was being carried out on the property before the alert, whether it was authorised, who supervised it and what Development Control records exist for the site.
Until those questions are answered, the verified position remains limited: one worker was injured, no death was reported, and NEMA said the five-storey structure under construction had been “partially pulled down.”
