Troops operating across Nigeria’s North-West say they rescued six members of one family from an attempted kidnapping in Zamfara State and killed a suspected terrorist during a separate operation in Sokoto State.
The Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fansan Yamma, said both operations took place on Saturday, September 26.
In Zamfara, the military said troops responded to information that armed men were attempting to abduct members of a family in Tsafe Local Government Area.
According to the task force, troops confronted the attackers, who later withdrew from the area.
The military says the six members of the family were rescued unharmed. Reports also said they were reunited with their relatives.
IDNN has not independently verified the sequence of the confrontation or obtained separate accounts from the rescued family.
Separate operation in Sokoto
In Sokoto State, the military said troops acted on intelligence about a suspected terrorist camp around Karani village in Gudu Local Government Area.
The task force said troops engaged suspects at the location and killed one person it described as a suspected terrorist, while others escaped.
The military also said an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, a motorcycle, camouflage clothing and other items were recovered during the operation.
The identity and affiliation of the person killed have not been independently established by IDNN.
Wider security operations
The September 26 incidents come amid continuing military operations against kidnapping and armed groups across the North-West.
In a separate operation reported earlier in September, Operation Fansan Yamma said troops rescued 23 kidnapped people in Sokoto State.
The Defence Headquarters has also reported wider rescue and arrest figures from operations across several states. Those figures remain official military accounts and are separate from the September 26 Zamfara and Sokoto incidents.
The immediate accountability question is whether repeated security operations are producing sustained reductions in kidnapping risk for communities across the region.
For the Zamfara case, the military says the six victims were rescued unharmed. What remains unclear is whether the attackers were later identified or apprehended and whether the family faces any continuing security risk.
