Rivers State Police Command says it has rescued a woman identified as Loveth and arrested a 35-year-old man as investigators pursue others allegedly involved in her abduction.
Police say Loveth was abducted on September 2 while sitting outside her shop in Eleme Local Government Area.
According to the command, armed men approached her, fired shots into the air and forced her into a vehicle.
That account comes from police and remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Police say intelligence operation led to rescue
The command says operatives of the Eleme Police Division began an intelligence-led operation after the reported abduction.
Police say officers later encountered the suspected kidnappers and exchanged gunfire with them.
Loveth was rescued during the operation.
Police also arrested Victor Ini, 35, whom the command describes as a suspected member of the gang.
His arrest does not establish that he participated in the kidnapping or committed any offence.
Police say efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other people allegedly involved.
Police report recovery of vehicle and weapons
The command says officers recovered a silver-coloured mini Keke bus, two locally made pistols, one round of live ammunition, a mobile phone, two identity cards, two black gowns and a vehicle number plate during the operation.
Those items form part of the police investigation.
Their recovery during the operation does not, by itself, establish that Ini owned, possessed or used any of them during the abduction.
Any evidential link between the recovered items, the kidnapping and specific suspects will have to be established through the investigation and, if charges follow, tested in court.
Suspect alleges he was promised ₦40,000
The case took another turn after police released an interrogation video in which Ini allegedly said he joined the group after being promised ₦40,000.
According to the account reported from that video, Ini said the plan was to abduct the woman, collect money from her and later release her.
He also alleged that another person had directed the operation after claiming the victim had money.
Those statements are untested claims attributed to Ini in a police-released interrogation recording.
They should not be treated as proof that he committed the offence or as proof against any other person he named.
An interrogation statement is not a conviction
Statements made while a suspect is in police custody may form part of an investigation.
But publication of such statements does not determine guilt.
If charges are brought, the evidential value of the statement will have to be tested alongside the rest of the case.
The same caution applies to allegations made by one suspect about others.
A person being named in an interrogation is not proof that the person organised, financed or participated in a kidnapping.
The victim’s rescue is the clearest outcome
The strongest verified development is that Loveth was rescued alive.
Police reporting says she was recovered during the operation and that the command is continuing to search for others allegedly connected to the case.
That shifts the accountability question from immediate rescue to evidence.
Who abducted her?
What role, if any, did each suspect play?
Can investigators establish who planned the operation?
And can recovered items and statements be connected to specific defendants through evidence that survives judicial scrutiny?
The accountability test
The police operation produced a rescued victim, one arrest and a collection of exhibits.
Those are significant investigative developments.
They are not a substitute for proof.
Authorities now need to establish individual responsibility without turning arrest, interrogation claims or association with recovered items into presumed guilt.
