Ondo probes mystery deaths as police await tests on suspected herbal drinks
Authorities in Ondo State are investigating multiple deaths in Odigbo Local Government Area after local authorities reported at least 24 fatalities, while police cautioned that both the final casualty figure and the cause remain under investigation.
The deaths were reported across communities including Odigbo, Araromi-Obu and Orita New Town, where residents were said to have fallen ill after allegedly consuming locally produced alcoholic or herbal preparations.
But investigators have not established that those substances caused the deaths.
Ondo State Police said medical personnel are working with state and local health authorities to collect evidence and determine what happened, while toxicological and laboratory examinations are being conducted on samples connected to the cases.
Final death toll still being established
Early local-government accounts put the number of deaths at 24, including eight in Araromi-Obu and 16 in Odigbo town.
Subsequent reports have cited higher figures, but police said investigators were still compiling information from hospitals and affected communities and had not confirmed a final toll.
That distinction is critical: an increasing reported figure is not the same as a final verified casualty count.
The safest established position is that at least 24 deaths have been reported by local authorities, while higher figures remain unverified pending the completion of police and health investigations.
Suspicion centres on local preparations, but tests have not proved a cause
Accounts from the affected communities have linked some of the illnesses to locally produced alcoholic drinks and herbal concoctions.
Local officials have also reported that some of those who died had consumed a substance before falling ill.
Police, however, have warned against attributing the deaths to any particular preparation before laboratory analysis is complete.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid suspicious or unregulated consumable products while the investigation continues.
No producer, seller or individual has been established by the available evidence as responsible for the deaths.
What regulators now need to establish
Beyond identifying the medical cause of the fatalities, the investigation raises questions about how the products being examined entered circulation and what regulatory oversight applied to them.
If laboratory evidence eventually identifies a harmful substance, authorities will still need to establish who produced or distributed it, whether existing regulations were breached and whether any enforcement failure contributed to the public risk.
Those questions remain open.
For residents of the affected communities, the decisive next development will be the evidence from the laboratories and investigators: what caused the deaths, how many people ultimately died, whether others remain at risk and whether any breach or criminal responsibility can be established.
Until then, suspicion must remain suspicion — not a finding.
