Police arrest man over suspected cult-related killing in Owerri

Police in Imo State say they have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the suspected cult-related killing of Nnamdi Okeke in Owerri.

The Imo State Police Command identified the arrested man as Bright Adiene and said another person, identified as Anyima, was being sought as investigations continued.

Police described the killing as suspected cult-related. That remains the command’s characterisation of the incident and does not establish cult membership or guilt against any suspect.

Investigation continues

According to the police account, Adiene was taken into custody in connection with the killing while investigators continued efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding Okeke’s death and identify everyone involved.

The command also said efforts were ongoing to locate Anyima.

Neither Adiene’s arrest nor the search for another person establishes criminal responsibility.

No formal charge, plea or judicial finding against Adiene has been established in the verified record available to IDNN.

Cult link remains unproven

Police have described the case as a suspected cult-related killing.

That does not amount to an independently verified finding that Adiene belongs to a cult group or that cult rivalry has been conclusively established as the motive.

Those questions remain part of the investigation.

IDNN has also not established any court record or formal prosecution setting out the allegations against Adiene beyond the police account of his arrest in connection with the case.

Police intensify operations

Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso ordered intensified intelligence-led operations, targeted raids and stronger patrols following the incident.

The command also said it was strengthening community engagement as part of its wider security response.

Those operational measures do not alter the legal status of any individual suspect.

The next material development will be whether police formally charge any suspect, provide additional evidence linking individuals to the killing or produce a court record clarifying the allegations.

For now, the verified position is that police have arrested Adiene in connection with a suspected cult-related killing in Owerri, while the investigation remains ongoing.
