Two Hospitalised After Diesel Tanker Falls From Otedola Bridge, Bursts Into Flames
Two men were hospitalised with serious burns after a diesel-laden tanker fell from Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and caught fire on Monday, triggering a multi-agency emergency response.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the tanker was carrying about 33,000 litres of diesel when it fell from the bridge and burst into flames beneath it.
The two adult male victims sustained second- and third-degree burns and were stabilised before being taken for further treatment.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash occurred at about 4:10 p.m. on October 19. FRSC said its preliminary findings pointed to speeding as the reported cause of the single-vehicle crash.
No fatality was reported.
Emergency Teams Move In
LASEMA said its response team was deployed after receiving a distress alert.
Personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, NNPC Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, FRSC, police and ambulance services also responded.
Emergency workers cordoned off the area and battled the fire while taking steps to prevent it from spreading to nearby property and infrastructure.
The injured men were evacuated to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for treatment.
LASEMA later said the fire had been extinguished and traffic restored along the Otedola Bridge corridor.
The Road-Safety Question
The incident again raises questions over the risks posed by heavy-duty vehicles carrying flammable products through one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors.
FRSC’s assessment that speeding contributed to the crash remains preliminary and should not be treated as a final accident finding.
The wider accountability question is whether tanker operators are complying with vehicle-safety, speed and hazardous-cargo requirements — and how effectively those rules are being enforced.
LASTMA urged operators of articulated and other heavy-duty vehicles to conduct regular mechanical checks and comply with safety regulations.
The condition of the two injured men remains the immediate human consequence to track, alongside any enforcement or investigation arising from the crash.
