Two Dead, Hundreds Displaced as Flood Hits More Than 18 Nasarawa Communities
Two people have died and hundreds have been displaced after severe flooding swept through more than 18 communities in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, according to the state government.
Homes and farmland were damaged across Eke Development Area, forcing families to leave flooded communities and move to higher ground.
Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, described the flooding as a serious humanitarian emergency.
The Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency has been directed to assess the damage and determine the scale of the response required.
Families Forced Out
Displaced residents have moved into communities including Agyema, Agbachi and Rukubi.
That movement is increasing pressure on host communities, where families now need shelter, food, water and other basic relief.
Authorities have warned residents not to return to flooded areas until conditions are safe and have urged people in vulnerable low-lying communities to move to higher ground.
Farms and Homes Damaged
The flood has also hit homes and farmland, deepening the impact on families who depend on agriculture for income and food.
The full scale of the losses is not yet known.
Officials have not released a final figure for damaged homes, affected farmland or financial losses because the emergency assessment is still underway.
Relief Is the Next Test
The state government says relief materials and essential supplies are being prepared for affected residents.
Officials have also raised concerns about possible disease outbreaks in crowded host communities.
The immediate test now is delivery: how quickly will displaced families receive support, what help will farmers get for damaged farmland, and what will be done to reduce the risk of another flood hitting the same communities?
For families already forced from their homes, the answer will depend on how quickly relief reaches them and when it becomes safe to return.
What IDNN Is Watching
IDNN will monitor NASEMA’s damage assessment, any change in the death toll, the delivery of relief materials and any official action on longer-term flood-control measures.
