The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has condemned the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing his decision to leave the party as a “historic betrayal” of the political movement that secured his election victory.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party said Yusuf’s exit undermined the collective sacrifices made by supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement, which it said played a decisive role in the 2023 general elections in Kano State.
Party Says Defection Betrays Electoral Mandate
According to the NNPP, Yusuf’s decision represents a rejection of the political platform and grassroots mobilisation that brought him to office.
“This defection is not just a personal decision; it is a betrayal of the mandate freely given by the people of Kano State under the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya banner,” the statement said.
The party accused the governor of prioritising political convenience over ideological commitment.
Kwankwasiyya Movement Cited as Foundation of Victory
The NNPP said the Kwankwasiyya movement, led by former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, provided the organisational strength and voter mobilisation that secured Yusuf’s victory.
“Without the Kwankwasiyya movement, there would have been no electoral success in Kano,” the party said.
“Walking away from that foundation is a disservice to millions of loyal supporters.”
Warning Over Impact on Party Unity
The party warned that Yusuf’s defection could weaken internal cohesion and encourage political instability if not addressed through dialogue and discipline.
NNPP officials said the leadership was consulting with stakeholders across Kano and at the national level to manage the fallout and prevent further defections.

Governor Yet to Respond to Party’s Claims
Governor Yusuf has not publicly responded to the NNPP’s statement as of the time of filing this report. His defection comes amid wider political realignments in Kano, with several elected officials also switching party allegiance.
