Security agencies have intensified efforts to rescue worshippers abducted in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, deploying additional personnel and senior command oversight as authorities acknowledge that the exact number of people taken has not been established.
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Victor Olaiya, to coordinate the operation, according to the Niger State Police Command.
Police said additional personnel from the Counter-Terrorism Unit and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit had also been provided to support the rescue effort, which is being conducted with other security agencies.
The operation follows attacks on August 21 in several communities in Borgu, including Kpenya and Gidan-Zana in Dekara District.
The Niger State Government said preliminary security reports showed that suspected terrorists attacked the communities during Friday prayers and abducted an unspecified number of worshippers.
But nearly a week after the attacks, a central question remains unresolved: how many people were abducted?
Niger State Commissioner for Information Obed Nuhu said on Thursday that the government could not confirm the number because officials were still gathering information.
He said the government would not speculate until verified details were available.
That differs from figures attributed by Premium Times to the Borgu council chairman, who said his records indicated that slightly more than 60 people were abducted and close to 30 were killed.
Those figures have not been independently established by IDNN, and the Niger State Government has not adopted them as a confirmed toll.
The distinction matters.
In an active security crisis, preliminary casualty or abduction figures can quickly become accepted as fact even when authorities are still trying to account for victims.
Federal Government Orders Coordinated Rescue
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security and intelligence agencies to conduct a coordinated operation to rescue the abducted residents.
He also directed the service chiefs to provide regular updates until the victims are accounted for.
At state level, police said security agencies were analysing available intelligence and planning the rescue operation.
Niger State authorities have also said a joint security effort was launched to track those responsible and facilitate the recovery of the abducted residents.
Authorities have not established publicly who carried out the attacks.
Nuhu said there was suspicion that Lakurawa and Boko Haram elements could have been involved, while a survivor separately alleged Lakurawa involvement.
Neither account establishes the identity of the attackers as a verified fact.
Communities Face the Consequence
The attacks have left affected communities dealing with reported deaths, missing residents and displacement while families wait for clearer information about those taken.
The Borgu council chairman told Premium Times that some residents had moved to safer areas following the violence.
Northern senators have also called for the captives’ release, assistance for affected communities and stronger security measures in Niger State and the wider region.
For federal and Niger State authorities, the immediate test now goes beyond announcing a rescue operation.
They must account reliably for those taken, establish an authoritative casualty record, secure the safe return of the captives and show how communities exposed by the attacks will be protected after the immediate security response.
For now, the rescue effort is active.
The number of abducted residents remains officially unresolved.
