NAF Opens Probe Into Fatal Ondo Aircraft Crash as Cause Remains Unknown
The Nigerian Air Force has opened an investigation into the crash of one of its aircraft in Ondo State, with investigators working to preserve evidence as the cause remains undetermined.
The aircraft, identified by NAF as NAF 931, an ATR-42, crashed near Igbokoda, Ondo State, on October 5, 2026, while flying from Benin to Lagos.
NAF says 25 people were on board — five crew members and 20 passengers — and no survivors were found.
No official finding has yet established what caused the crash.
NAF says investigation is active
The Air Force says evidence from the crash site is being secured, documented and preserved as part of a comprehensive investigation ordered by the Chief of the Air Staff.
The inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the flight and crash.
Until formal findings are released, mechanical failure, maintenance problems, pilot error, weather conditions or any other possible explanation remain unverified.
Earlier official count of 32 superseded
Earlier official statements cited 32 occupants, but NAF later issued a 25-person manifest after reviewing the flight record.
The current authoritative figure is therefore 25 people aboard.
The earlier count should only be referenced as a superseded figure, not as the current occupant or casualty total.
NSIB not leading military-aircraft probe
The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau is not leading the investigation because the aircraft was military.
However, the bureau has indicated that it can provide technical support if formally invited by the Nigerian Air Force.
Any such assistance does not change the fact that the investigation remains under military authority unless NAF brings in outside technical expertise.
Questions raised, but cause remains unproven
The crash has prompted wider questions about military aviation safety, aircraft maintenance and defence spending.
Those issues may be relevant to the public debate around the accident, but none has been established as the cause.
The investigation must first determine what the available evidence shows.
For the families of those on board, the immediate accountability issue is whether the inquiry produces a credible explanation of what happened.
For now, the verified position is clear:
A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 crashed near Igbokoda on October 5 with 25 people aboard. NAF says no survivors were found. The Air Force has opened an investigation, and the cause remains unknown.
