FCT Ebola response: October 29 NCDC report lists 62 contacts under monitoring

NCDC’s situation report dated October 29 lists 62 contacts under follow-up in Nigeria’s response to the confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory.

As of that reporting date, the document records one confirmed case, no deaths and no contacts recorded positive. It also reports no newly identified contacts or symptomatic contacts during the preceding 24 hours. Those findings do not establish that every contact has been tested or cleared.

Follow-up continues after patient’s evacuation

The report describes the index patient as clinically stable and says she was evacuated to Switzerland on October 26. It does not establish her recovery.

Contact-monitoring completion dates are projected between October 31 and November 13. These are expected dates, rather than confirmation that follow-up has ended.

In its October 25 public statement, NCDC explained that contacts are monitored for 21 days from their last possible exposure. Identification as a contact does not mean a person has Ebola.

Suspected Enugu case tests negative

The October 29 report records a negative result for a suspected case from Enugu. It does not identify that person as a confirmed case.

The Federal Health Ministry announced the original FCT confirmation on October 20. WHO separately reported the imported Bundibugyo Ebola case and described support for surveillance, contact tracing and infection prevention.

NCDC urges cooperation with public-health teams

NCDC’s October 25 guidance urged cooperation with contact tracers, regular hand hygiene and avoidance of direct contact with blood or body fluids from suspected cases.

People with possible exposure were advised to contact public-health authorities promptly. Those developing symptoms after possible exposure should seek instructions before visiting a health facility.

The October 29 findings do not constitute an announcement that Nigeria is Ebola-free.
