A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja was gripped by shocking revelations on Wednesday as a top official from the Department of State Services (DSS) testified that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), were once caught eating human flesh and using body parts for spiritual fortification.

The DSS witness, testifying in the ongoing terrorism trial of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, said agents discovered the scene during a raid on an ESN hideout. Seven members were allegedly found with human heads.

“They said it was for spiritual protection,” the DSS official stated under oath.

MASS KILLINGS, BURIAL RITUALS, AND DEATH LISTS

According to the testimony:

  • IPOB/ESN members are believed to have killed between 170 to 200 security operatives

  • Two DSS officers, including the witness’s driver, were among the victims

  • 30 heads were allegedly gathered for the burial of slain commander “Ikonso”

  • Kanu was said to have ordered 2,000 human heads for the burial

The witness recounted how Onye Army, an ESN operative, confessed that 10 female heads were used to prepare charms.

RADIO BIAFRA TRANSMITTER SMUGGLED

Kanu illegally imported a German-made radio transmitter

The court also heard that:

  • Kanu illegally imported a German-made radio transmitter

  • It was used to operate Radio Biafra

  • No license was granted by the National Broadcasting Commission

Investigators traced the transmitter using digital location analysis from videos showing Kanu inspecting the equipment.

 GULAK MURDER, SECTARIAN EXECUTIONS

The DSS official also described how IPOB members allegedly executed Ahmed Gulak, former presidential aide, during a 2021 sit-at-home order in Imo State. According to the driver’s account:

  • Gulak was forced out of a cab

  • He claimed to be Igbo

  • But his Muslim prayer mark gave him away

  • He was shot after failing to speak Igbo

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS & LEGAL RISKS

Under cross-examination by Kanu’s legal team, the DSS witness admitted:

  • He wasn’t present at Kanu’s arrest

  • He wasn’t aware if the transmitter was cleared by a registered agent

  • Some evidence was provided via video and oral confessions, not physical documentation

Nonetheless, the case has stirred public concern as the Federal Government doubles down on prosecuting IPOB under terrorism laws.
