Adamawa flesh-eating disease kills 7 as FG launches urgent probe

FG probes flesh-eating disease after seven deaths in Adamawa.

By IDNN Health Desk

The Federal Government has launched an urgent probe after seven people died from a mysterious flesh-eating disease in Malabu, Adamawa. Health officials suspect Buruli ulcer, a neglected tropical disease.

Dr Adesigbin Olufemi confirmed 67 cases, with eight patients already undergoing surgery in Yola. He stressed awareness is critical, warning myths around witchcraft had delayed treatment in some cases.

Nigeria’s Battle with Neglected Diseases

Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, typically thrives in swampy environments. Nigeria has struggled with similar outbreaks due to poor sanitation and lack of clean water.

Fear, Awareness, and System Strain

The outbreak exposes vulnerabilities in rural healthcare. Authorities are racing to contain spread and reassure residents that the disease is not contagious in the traditional sense. Long-term, the crisis underscores the need for safe water access in remote communities.
