Nigerians Abroad: Lookman Carries Atlético Minutes Into Super Eagles Duty

Ademola Lookman has moved from a demanding opening stretch with Atlético Madrid straight into another pressure window with Nigeria.

The Super Eagles forward has made seven LaLiga appearances this season, starting six and logging 460 minutes.

That level of involvement matters.

Lookman is not on the margins in Madrid. He is getting regular starts and substantial minutes inside Diego Simeone’s squad while remaining one of the established attacking options available to Nigeria.

The next question is whether those minutes become greater attacking impact.

Regular minutes have established his Atlético role

Lookman joined Atlético from Atalanta and signed a contract running until June 2030.

His introduction came with immediate attacking impact, including a goal and an assist on his Atlético debut in the Copa del Rey.

His current league return is more measured: one goal from seven appearances.

But six starts from those seven matches establish something important before the debate moves to output.

Lookman is playing.

He has earned repeated selection and built an early role in Madrid rather than relying on isolated substitute appearances.

That creates the platform. It also raises the expectation.

Regular minutes eventually have to produce decisive numbers.

Nigeria add another layer of pressure

Lookman’s club involvement has carried directly into international duty.

Éric Chelle included him among Nigeria’s established attacking options for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He started against Madagascar and played 69 minutes as the Super Eagles recovered from a goal down to win 2-1.

For Nigeria, that continued involvement reinforces his position inside the attacking structure.

It also increases the demand.

The Super Eagles do not only need Lookman available. They need one of their most established European forwards to influence matches through goals, assists, chance creation and decisive moments.

The pressure line is now clear
