The UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase moves into its second round on Wednesday with five fixtures carrying very different kinds of early pressure.
Barcelona arrive in Rome defending both their European title and a perfect start. Arsenal travel to Paris looking to build on an opening victory. Chelsea face one of the night’s hardest assignments against an OL Lyonnes side that began its campaign with eight unanswered goals.
Elsewhere, Juventus need a response in Gothenburg while Benfica attempt to follow their statement win in Turin with another major result against Bayern München.
Roma face the holders
Roma’s reward for taking a point from their opening game is a meeting with the defending champions.
The Italian side drew 0-0 away to OH Leuven on Matchday 1, while Barcelona opened their campaign with a 5-2 victory over Paris FC.
Barcelona had to respond after falling behind, with Ewa Pajor scoring twice as the holders demonstrated the attacking depth that again makes them one of the competition’s central reference points.
Roma therefore face an immediate escalation. They showed resilience in their opener, but Barcelona arrive with the capacity to punish even short periods of defensive instability.
Arsenal take their winning start to Paris
Arsenal opened with a 1-0 victory over HB Køge Women.
The margin was narrow, but the result gave them the foundation every league-phase campaign needs: three points before the schedule becomes more demanding.
Paris FC arrive from the opposite direction. They scored first against Barcelona on Matchday 1 but were eventually beaten 5-2.
That gives the meeting an early contrast in pressure. Arsenal have momentum to protect. Paris FC need to show that their opening defeat has not pushed them immediately onto the back foot.
Chelsea walk into Lyon’s fire
The most imposing Matchday 1 scoreline belonged to OL Lyonnes.
The French side demolished Servette 8-0, with Marie-Antoinette Katoto completing a hat-trick and Melchie Dumornay scoring twice.
Chelsea began more quietly with a 1-0 victory over Austria Wien.
The trip to Lyon therefore represents an immediate rise in difficulty.
Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor also returns to the club she previously led, adding another layer to one of the headline fixtures of the round.
If Chelsea can slow Lyon’s attack, their opening win will begin to look like the start of something substantial.
If Lyon reproduce even part of their Matchday 1 force, the rest of Europe will receive another warning.
Juventus already need a response
Juventus do not have the luxury of easing into Matchday 2.
They lost 2-1 at home to Benfica on opening night, while Häcken also began with defeat after losing 1-0 to Inter.
Two teams therefore enter the game searching for their first points.
Another defeat would leave either side chasing the league-phase pack after only two rounds, giving the meeting greater consequence than its early position on the calendar might suggest.
Benfica face another heavyweight test
Benfica’s victory in Turin was one of Matchday 1’s strongest results.
Now they host Bayern München, who opened with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City.
Benfica have already shown they can win away against high-level opposition. Bayern arrive needing to turn an opening draw into their first victory.
That makes Lisbon another important early measuring point.
Benfica can strengthen the credibility of their opening result. Bayern need to prevent one draw from becoming an uncertain start.
Matchday 2 can begin separating contenders
The league phase remains young, but the 18-team format gives every early result weight.
Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, OL Lyonnes and Benfica enter Wednesday with winning starts to protect.
Roma have a point to build from.
Juventus and Häcken already need a response.
By the end of the night, several teams could have established early control of their campaigns while others may already be chasing ground before Matchday 3.
The knockout rounds remain months away, but the league-phase table can begin taking shape now.
