Abuja-Lokoja road project faces revocation threat over delays

The Federal Government has threatened to revoke the contract for the Abuja-Lokoja highway if work does not move faster. Minister of Works David Umahi issued the warning during an inspection, praising the quality of work but condemning its slow pace.

“The quality of the job is excellent, the pace of the work is nonsense,” Umahi said.

He directed contractors to agree to milestones or risk having portions reassigned.

Why Abuja-Lokoja Road Matters

The 200km highway is a key trade and travel link between Abuja, Kogi, and southern Nigeria. Chronic delays have plagued the project, which has been under construction for years.

Contractors Under Pressure

Failure to accelerate progress could see contracts terminated and reallocated. With ₦56bn already approved for one section, the government is under pressure to show results before April 2026 deadlines.
