Army Arrests Man, Recovers AK-47 on Benin–Sapele Road as Kidnapping Link Is Probed
Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade have arrested a man in Edo State and reported recovering an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during an operation along the Benin–Sapele Road.
The Army identified the man as Olamide Oyeniyi and said he was arrested on September 12 at Obaretin Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
Military authorities have described him as a suspected kidnapper.
But the Army also says his possible involvement in kidnapping and links to criminal networks remain under investigation.
Oyeniyi has not been convicted of any offence.
What the Army says it recovered
According to the military account, troops recovered:
- one AK-47 rifle;
- one magazine;
- eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition;
- a Tecno mobile phone;
- two bags;
- a torchlight;
- a music box; and
- assorted charms.
Those items are military-reported exhibits.
Their recovery does not by itself establish ownership, criminal use or Oyeniyi’s involvement in kidnapping.
Kidnapping link remains under investigation
The Army says investigators are working to establish whether Oyeniyi has links to criminal networks and whether he was involved in kidnapping incidents around the Benin–Sapele corridor.
That distinction is central to the story.
An arrest is not a conviction.
The recovery of a weapon is also not proof that the person arrested committed a kidnapping offence.
No charge sheet, court finding or conviction reviewed by IDNN has established criminal responsibility.
Wider security concern
The arrest comes amid continuing security operations in Edo targeting kidnapping and armed crime around highways and communities.
Separate arrests or rescue operations elsewhere in the state should not be treated as evidence against Oyeniyi.
The accountability question is whether security agencies can establish a clear evidential link between suspects, recovered weapons and specific crimes before prosecution.
What investigators still need to establish
The investigation should determine:
- whether the recovered rifle is linked to any reported crime;
- whether evidence connects Oyeniyi to kidnapping incidents;
- whether other suspects or networks are involved;
- whether the matter will be handed over to civilian police; and
- what charges, if any, are eventually filed.
For now, the verified position remains:
