UNICROSS lecturers resumed strike over salary dispute

UNICROSS lecturers resumed strike on November 2 over salary, welfare dispute

Lecturers at the University of Cross River State resumed their suspended strike on November 2 over outstanding salaries and welfare demands, according to a university statement.

The November 3 statement confirmed that the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities branch took the decision at an emergency congress, despite management’s appeal for more time.

Branch chairman Dr Patrick Ushie said members had not received their September and October salaries when the decision was taken. He also cited unmet commitments under the renegotiated 2025 Federal Government–ASUU agreement.

Union demands payment and implementation

Ushie said the union had suspended its earlier action following government intervention but resumed it because outstanding commitments had not been fulfilled.

According to PUNCH’s account, he directed members to withdraw teaching and supervision services. He said lecturers were willing to return once their salaries and other demands were addressed.

Management cites salary approval

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey attended the congress and appealed for patience, according to the university.

She said Governor Bassey Otu had approved salary payment and that the state Accountant General had assured her October salaries would be paid before close of business on November 2.

The congress nevertheless resolved to resume the strike. The university said members indicated that another congress would consider suspension once October salaries were paid.

Earlier strike began in May

The action originally began on May 19 and was suspended on July 21, according to the university’s account.

IDNN has not independently confirmed subsequent salary payments, any later union resolution or current campus conditions.
