Zamfara police convoy ambush: Five reported dead

Five police officers were killed in an ambush while travelling from Sokoto towards Zamfara for a special-duty assignment, according to Tribune, which attributed confirmation of the deaths to a Zone 10 police spokesperson.

The newspaper reported that the spokesperson, speaking in a telephone interview on Monday, November 2, said the officers’ remains had been deposited at the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.

PUNCH separately reported five deaths, citing an unnamed officer who said he survived the attack. According to his account, personnel were travelling in three vehicles when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle at the rear.

Accounts differ on attack date

Channels Television reported an ambush on police personnel along the Sokoto–Gusau road, describing the officers as travelling towards Gusau in a Zamfara State mass-transit bus. Its report said the casualty total could not be established at the time of filing.

Reports differ on the attack date: PUNCH and Tribune place it on November 1, while Channels Television gives November 2. IDNN has not independently reconciled the timeline, precise location or casualty total.

Tribune reported that the Zone 10 police spokesperson promised further details. The reports reviewed did not establish the identities of the officers killed.
