Oyo Doctors’ Warning Strike: Welfare Demands Reported

Oyo medical officers’ warning strike: Welfare demands and emergency directive reported

Medical and dental officers employed by the Oyo State Government began a reported seven-day warning strike on October 26 over welfare, salary and staffing demands, according to Africa Health Report, which quoted the association’s chairman, Dr Solomon Olaoye.

The outlet reported that the Association of Medical and Dental Officers of Oyo State directed members to attend to emergencies and refer patients requiring further treatment.

That instruction does not establish the emergency services currently available at individual hospitals.

Allowances and recruitment among demands

According to the report, the association’s demands include professional and accoutrement allowances, salary-progression adjustments, restoration of salaries affecting transferred doctors and recruitment to address staffing shortages.

Olaoye reportedly said the decision followed an emergency general meeting and earlier engagements with government officials. The material reviewed does not establish whether the warning action has since been suspended, extended or resolved.

Earlier LAUTECH hospital dispute is separate

The AMDO action is distinct from the earlier industrial dispute at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

Radio Nigeria reported on October 16 that resident doctors and Joint Health Sector Unions members at the teaching hospital had suspended their strike following a stakeholders’ meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde. Union representatives directed members to resume clinical duties, while the governor made commitments on outstanding entitlements. Those commitments concerned a separate dispute and do not establish a settlement of AMDO’s demands.

A current government response specifically addressing the reported October 26 AMDO action was not located in the material reviewed. Its latest negotiating position and the union’s current strike status remain unconfirmed.
