NAFDAC destroys seized products in Lafia, values haul at about ₦8bn
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed products seized across North-Central Nigeria, putting their combined value at about ₦8 billion.
The exercise took place in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on October 29. NAFDAC said the consignment included banned, expired, counterfeit and adulterated products recovered during enforcement operations.
NAFDAC product destruction covers several categories
Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Joseph Edor, said the products were seized from manufacturing facilities, sales outlets, markets and motor parks.
According to the agency, alcoholic beverages in sachets and small containers below 200 millilitres constituted the bulk of the consignment. Other items included food, medicines and cosmetics classified as expired, counterfeit or otherwise unwholesome.
The reported consignment covered several enforcement categories, rather than counterfeit medicines alone.
Agency cites concerns about underage access
In remarks delivered on her behalf, Adeyeye described the small-pack alcoholic beverages as banned products. She said their affordability, availability and portability made them accessible to young people and underage students.
She presented enforcement against the products as part of NAFDAC’s response to alcohol misuse.
Nasarawa State NAFDAC coordinator Gyani Stephen said the destruction was intended to protect public health and warned traders against dealing in fake and banned products.
NAFDAC urges public to report suspected illegal products
The agency urged the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing, repackaging and sales of counterfeit products, according to Blueprint’s account of the exercise.
The material reviewed did not include an itemised inventory, affected batch numbers or prosecution outcomes.
