Nigeria Claim 14 Medals At Uganda Para Badminton Championship

Nigeria’s Para Badminton team returned from the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship with 14 medals, according to the editor source pack.

The reported haul comprised nine gold and five silver medals, strengthening Nigeria’s profile in African para badminton after the championship, which ran from July 7 to July 12 in Uganda.

Lyka Brown was one of Nigeria’s standout performers. She won gold in the WH1 women’s singles before partnering Ijeoma Gift to win the WH1 and WH2 women’s doubles. Gift also won gold in the WH2 women’s singles.

In the men’s wheelchair category, Emmanuel Ohaeri won the WH2 men’s singles and combined with Brown to take gold in the WH1 and WH2 mixed doubles.

Ohaeri also paired with Ekeoma Samuel to win silver in the WH1 and WH2 men’s doubles. Samuel added silver in the WH1 men’s singles and another silver alongside Gift in the WH1 and WH2 mixed doubles.

Nigeria also produced strong results in the standing categories.

Obinna Nwosu won gold in the SL3 men’s singles, while Eze Chukwuebuka took silver in the same event. The pair later combined to win silver in the SL3 and SU5 men’s doubles.

Nnanna Chigozie won gold in the SL4 men’s singles and partnered Chukwuebuka to add another gold in the SL3 and SU5 men’s doubles. Eneojo Agada completed Nigeria’s gold run with victory in the SU5 men’s singles.

Badminton Federation of Nigeria President Francis Orbih described the medal haul as another sign that the country can depend on its para badminton athletes.

“The para badminton athletes have once again shown that the country can depend on them in terms of winning medals and making the country proud,” Orbih said, according to the source pack.

“This current board will continue to support the para athletes and ensure they get all the necessary support.”

Orbih also said the Paralympic Games remain the long-term target, adding that the federation wants to qualify as many athletes as possible and build on the international progress already made by Nigeria’s para badminton programme.

The performance matters beyond the medal count.

For a Nigerian sports desk often dominated by football, the Uganda result is another reminder that the country’s competitive strength stretches across para sport, athletics, table tennis, badminton and other disciplines that deserve stronger visibility.

Nigeria’s athletes did not just bring home medals. They gave the country another multi-sport story worth following into the next qualification cycle.
