Kano Hajj Board Says Outstanding 2026 Fare Refunds Cleared

Kano Hajj Board Says Outstanding Fare Refunds Cleared, Urges Unpaid Pilgrims to Check Accounts

The Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board says it has cleared outstanding refunds owed to intending pilgrims after the 2026 Hajj fare was reduced.

The board’s Director-General, Abubakar Ibrahim-Matawalle, said the refunds were paid in about five batches to pilgrims who had deposited money under the earlier fare arrangement.

But the announcement does not independently establish that every eligible pilgrim has received the money.

The board itself advised anyone still unpaid to contact their bank or local government Hajj officer.

Why refunds became necessary

Intending pilgrims in Kano had paid deposits based on a higher provisional fare before the cost of the 2026 Hajj was revised downward.

In November 2025, the board announced a revised fare of N7,696,769.76 for pilgrims in the state.

A later May 2026 refund statement cited N7,696,813.

Because those official figures differ slightly, IDNN is not calculating or publishing a single universal refund amount for every affected pilgrim.

Refunds were already underway before May

The refund process had begun months earlier.

By December 2025, the board said 109 pilgrims had received refunds and urged other affected pilgrims to collect outstanding balances.

That supports the board’s account that payments were being processed in batches.

It does not, however, establish that every eligible pilgrim ultimately received the money.

Board says obligation has been discharged

In its May 6 update, the board said the outstanding refund exercise had been completed in about five batches.

That is the official position.

But no beneficiary-by-beneficiary reconciliation, complete payment register or independent bank evidence reviewed by IDNN establishes universal receipt.

That distinction matters.

A payment can be recorded as processed or disbursed by an institution without independently proving that every beneficiary has received and accessed the funds.

Unpaid pilgrims told to report

The board advised anyone who had not received a refund to contact their bank or the Hajj officer in their local government area.

That instruction creates the central accountability question.

If the board considers its refund obligation fully discharged, how many beneficiaries, if any, still have unresolved payment complaints?

The answer requires reconciliation between the board’s payment records and actual beneficiary receipt.

The public-interest questions

The key questions are straightforward:

How many pilgrims were entitled to refunds?

How many payments were successfully completed?

How many remain disputed or unresolved?

And can the board produce a reconciled payment schedule showing that all eligible pilgrims received what they were owed?

For affected households, the issue is practical.

It is not only whether the board says the money was paid.

It is whether the money reached the people entitled to receive it.

What is verified

The Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board says it has cleared outstanding fare-difference refunds.

It says the payments were made in about five batches.

Earlier in the refund process, the board reported that 109 pilgrims had received money.

It has also directed anyone still unpaid to contact their bank or local Hajj officer.

What IDNN has not independently verified is that every eligible beneficiary has received the refund.

Until beneficiary-level evidence or a reconciled official payment schedule is available, the board’s claim should remain attributed.
