Patience Home Handed to FG for SGBV Survivor Support in Lagos

Patience Home Handed to FG as SGBV Survivor-Support Test Shifts to Delivery

The New Era Foundation has handed over Patience Home in Lagos to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency as part of efforts to expand support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

The facility is intended to provide safe accommodation, healthcare, psychosocial support, legal assistance, rehabilitation and empowerment services for women affected by abuse.

The handover follows a tripartite memorandum of understanding signed in June 2026 by the ministry, NPHCDA and the foundation.

From Transitional Home to SGBV Facility

Patience Home was established in 2019 by the New Era Foundation as a transitional residential and empowerment centre for vulnerable women, particularly widows.

Under the new arrangement, it is being repositioned as a rehabilitation and support facility for survivors of gender-based and domestic violence.

The foundation says the handover completes its commitment under the agreement and transfers responsibility for continuing operations to the government partners.

Who Is Responsible for What?

Under the MoU, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs is expected to oversee day-to-day management, social services, legal support, advocacy and empowerment programmes.

NPHCDA is expected to coordinate healthcare services, including medical equipment, start-up consumables, clinical training and periodic quality assessments.

Officials have also said the facility is intended to support medical and mental-health care and referral links with primary healthcare and other services.

Those commitments now create a clear delivery test: whether the planned services become consistently available to survivors.

Handover Does Not Mean Full Operational Readiness

Officials have described Patience Home as a safe space where survivors can recover, rebuild confidence and regain independence.

But the available reporting does not establish that every planned service is already fully staffed, funded and operating at full capacity.

NPHCDA has said the initiative’s success will depend on adequate funding, trained personnel, equipment and sustainable management.

That distinction matters because a facility can only fulfil its purpose if survivors can actually access coordinated care safely and consistently.

Nigeria’s Wider Survivor-Support Network

Women Affairs Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim has said Nigeria has 52 Sexual Assault Referral Centres.

That figure is an official ministerial statement and should not be treated as an independently audited national inventory.

Sexual Assault Referral Centres are also not the same thing as residential shelters or rehabilitation homes such as Patience Home.

The two types of facilities can complement each other, but they serve different functions within the survivor-support system.

The Accountability Test

The key question now is not whether the building has been handed over.

It is whether survivors can actually access:

  • safe accommodation;
  • medical and mental-health care;
  • psychosocial support;
  • legal assistance;
  • rehabilitation and economic support; and
  • confidential referral systems.

The government partners will also need to show how the home is funded, staffed and monitored without exposing survivors or compromising security.

What IDNN Is Watching

IDNN will monitor whether Patience Home begins verified intake, the staffing and funding arrangements, the services actually available, referral procedures and any measurable reporting on survivor outcomes.
